[PI] PI Editorial, May 1, 2002: Showtime!!! May Day is traditionally a day when we hear a lot about workers' rights. We hear it from apologists for regimes that, last century, murdered more people, including workers, than any other regimes in history. The twentieth century was a collectivist's dream, any decent person's nightmare. The challenge of the twenty-first century is to retrieve the dream of individualism & make it real, so that we may progress towards a society in which EVERYONE'S authentic rights are honoured. I'm delighted to use THIS May Day as the occasion to unveil a new, super-potent weapon in the individualist's arsenal. It's the new SOLO web site: http://solohq.com. It's a one-stop shop for Objectivists & anyone interested in Objectivism. It's the work of Jeff Landauer & Joseph Rowlands. It's magnificent - & I can think of no more fitting a way of introducing it than to quote Joe's Mission Statement: "Welcome to SOLO HQ -- Sense Of Life Objectivists Headquarters - the new and official website for SOLO. This site is our next shot fired in the war for freedom and rationality. Its purpose is to create a strong and prominent position for SOLO on the internet. The site is presented as a rallying point for Objectivists, and the voice of SOLOists. We aim to be your portal to rationally passionate Objectivism on the web. "One goal of this site is to act as a web-portal to Objectivism. It will provide dynamic content, so that people can get their daily dose of reason and thought-provoking ideas. It will have regular new articles. It will link to external articles of interest. It will have links to other Objectivist sites, forming a large Objectivist Web Directory. You can see these features on the front page. "Another goal of this site is to act as the official website for SOLO. To this end, it will promote SOLO articles, conferences, and other projects. It will contain up to date information about the Free Radical, including links to some of its highlights. It will contain pictures and descriptions of some of the many SOLO members and other contributors, with archives of their articles. It will contain the SOLO Credo, which explains the purpose of SOLO, and our driving motivation. "The site will also be used to organize. It will aim to teach those who still have questions about Objectivism. It will provide promotion and organizational help for projects that promote Objectivism in the culture. It will seek to bring like-minded people together in the spirit of cooperation, to increase our effectiveness and our scope in our effort to improve the culture." There is little I need add to this, but I WOULD like to draw everyone's attention to the fact that I have rewritten SOLO's Credo to place more emphasis on what we ARE about than on what we're not. I have come to realise two things very strongly since launching SOLO just over a year ago: 1) that the market for it - indeed the THIRST for it - is much bigger than I first imagined, & 2) that, though SOLO was born of frustration with existing Objectivist institutions, it is counter-productive & contrary to the spirit of SOLO to harp on about what I believe to be their deficiencies. The new Credo reflects these realisations. To my comrades Joe & Jeff, my warmest thanks & heartiest salute. To all other SOLOists, may you find many hours of pleasure & inspiration here ... & please, spread the word! Discuss this Article (3 messages) |
